Fentanyl Overdose Awareness: College Students’ Knowledge Gap

A recent study has uncovered a troubling trend: despite the surge in fentanyl-related fatal overdoses among young adults, a mere 1 in 7 American college students possess the knowledge to administer the life-saving antidote naloxone. Led by Christina Freibott and her team from the Boston University School of Public Health, the survey revealed a stark discrepancy between the high willingness to intervene during an overdose and the low proficiency in naloxone administration.

Published in JAMA Pediatrics, the findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced prevention and education efforts, especially on college campuses, where the risk of overdose is significant. With fentanyl increasingly infiltrating a wide array of recreational drugs, the ability to recognize overdose symptoms and administer naloxone could mean the difference between life and death. As such, addressing this issue should be prioritized as a critical public health initiative, given the staggering number of adolescents and young adults in higher education across the United States.
